Pickups for Acoustic Guitars
An acoustic guitar pickup captures the instrument's sound and sends it to an amplifier, mixing console or recording device. It lets you play loudly on stage without placing a microphone in front of the guitar. The category includes different pickup types, from simple aftermarket models to systems with a preamp and equaliser. When choosing, consider the mounting method, sound character and output.
Which type of pickup should you choose?
The pickup principle has a significant effect on the sound. Some pickups are mounted in the soundhole, others are attached to the body or bridge, and some combine several elements.
| Type | How it is installed | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Soundhole pickup | Fits into the guitar's soundhole without modifying the body | Simple installation; sound character varies by model |
| Contact pickup (transducer) | Attached to the body or mounted under the saddle | Accurate positioning affects the resulting sound |
| Universal pickup | Suitable for different instruments | Check compatibility with your instrument |
| System with preamp and EQ | Built into the guitar or supplied with its own control panel | Instrument modification and a power supply may be required |
Guitar, ukulele or another instrument?
Some models are intended for ukuleles or other stringed instruments, so check which instrument each one is designed for. The range includes brands such as Fishman, KNA Pickups, Cherub and Soundking, but always read the specific product parameters.
What to check before choosing
- The installation method and whether you can carry it out yourself.
- The output, such as a jack, and compatibility with your amplifier or mixing console.
- The preamp power supply and how the battery is replaced.
- Whether the guitar needs modification, such as an opening for the output jack.
- For advice on other useful items, see what to buy with an acoustic guitar.
If you are deciding between pickups and other equipment types, compare other guitar pickups or return to the guitar pickups category. If you are still choosing the instrument itself, read how to choose an acoustic guitar.
